Manufacturer description

Up until the 1970s coal was the predominant fuel of the UK and the demand was met by a multitude of coal mines spread all over the country. Rail was the principal means of distributing the coal and the 1923 RCH standard design of 12 ton 7 plank wagons with opening end doors were used widely for this purpose until superseded by the larger steel bodied hoppers in the late 1940s.

Many 7 plank wagons were privately owned, either by the mines themselves (the larger mines may have owned hundreds), the coal agents who acted as middlemen between the mines and the merchants and the individual coal merchants themselves. There was therefore a vast collection of liveries either specifically manufactured for larger fleets, or wagons were overprinted as was seen for many of the smaller merchants. Such was the volumes of coal moved in this period that rakes of 150 wagons or more were commonly seen leaving collieries destined for marshalling yards where the coal was organised for regional delivery.

Dapol 7 Plank GWF 06562 Weathered is an OO gauge model wagon in Great Western Railway grey livery with a weathered finish. It measures 82mm in length, 33mm in width and 35mm in height, and is fitted with NEM/Tension‑lock couplings. The minimum curve radius is listed as Radius 1. The model is supplied under manufacturer part number 4F‑071‑010 and represents the era of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).

The prototype of this wagon is the 1923 Railway Clearing House standard 12‑ton, 7‑plank coal wagon with opening end doors. These wagons were the principal means of distributing coal across the United Kingdom up to the 1970s, when coal was the dominant fuel. They were widely used by collieries, coal agents and independent merchants, resulting in a large variety of liveries and occasional over‑printing. Rakes of one hundred and fifty wagons or more were typical when moving coal from mines to marshalling yards for regional distribution.

The model reproduces the historic wagon with a high level of detail. It features profiled wheels, a finely moulded body, an accurate coal load and faithfully applied livery.

Dimensions are 82mm over the buffers, 33mm wide and 35mm high.
