Manufacturer description

Up until the 1970s coal was the predominant fuel of the UK and the demand was met by a multitude of coal mines spread all over the country. Rail was the principal means of distributing the coal and the 1923 RCH standard design of 12 ton 7 plank wagons with opening end doors were used widely for this purpose until superseded by the larger steel bodied hoppers in the late 1940s.

Many 7 plank wagons were privately owned, either by the mines themselves (the larger mines may have owned hundreds), the coal agents who acted as middlemen between the mines and the merchants and the individual coal merchants themselves. There was therefore a vast collection of liveries either specifically manufactured for larger fleets, or wagons were overprinted as was seen for many of the smaller merchants. Such was the volumes of coal moved in this period that rakes of 150 wagons or more were commonly seen leaving collieries destined for marshalling yards where the coal was organised for regional delivery.

Dapol LMS 7‑plank wagon (part number 4F‑071‑014) is a 00 gauge model representing the 1923 Railway Clearing House standard 12‑ton 7‑plank coal wagon. The model is finished in weathered LMS grey, measures 82 mm over buffers, 33 mm wide and 35 mm high, and is fitted with NEM/tension‑lock couplings. It can negotiate a minimum radius of 1 chain and is supplied by various manufacturers under the Dapol brand.

Historically, 7‑plank wagons with opening end doors were the principal freight vehicle for moving coal from the numerous British collieries until they were superseded by larger steel‑bodied hoppers in the late 1940s. They were owned by mines, coal agents and individual merchants, resulting in a wide variety of liveries and over‑prints. Large rakes of up to 150 wagons were common when departing collieries for regional marshalling yards.

The model is highly detailed, featuring profiled wheels, a finely moulded body, an accurately applied livery and a small coal load. It is suitable for inclusion in a period collection representing the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).
