Manufacturer description

Up until the 1970s coal was the predominant fuel of the UK and the demand was met by a multitude of coal mines spread all over the country. Rail was the principal means of distributing the coal and the 1923 RCH standard design of 12 ton 7 plank wagons with opening end doors were used widely for this purpose until superseded by the larger steel bodied hoppers in the late 1940s.

Many 7 plank wagons were privately owned, either by the mines themselves (the larger mines may have owned hundreds), the coal agents who acted as middlemen between the mines and the merchants and the individual coal merchants themselves. There was therefore a vast collection of liveries either specifically manufactured for larger fleets, or wagons were overprinted as was seen for many of the smaller merchants. Such was the volumes of coal moved in this period that rakes of 150 wagons or more were commonly seen leaving collieries destined for marshalling yards where the coal was organised for regional delivery.

Dapol SR 7 Plank wagon (item 37454) is a OO‑scale model of a 12‑ton, seven‑plank coal wagon built to the 1923 Railway Clearing House standard design. It is presented in Southern Railway brown livery with a weathered finish and is fitted with NEM/Tension‑lock couplings. The model has a minimum curve radius of 1 and measures 82 mm over buffers, 33 mm wide and 35 mm high. It carries a detailed coal load, profiled wheels and a finely moulded body, and bears the manufacturer part number 4F‑071‑016.

The prototype wagons were widely used by the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR) for transporting coal from mines across the United Kingdom until they were superseded by larger steel‑bodied hoppers in the late 1940s. Many were owned by the collieries, coal agents or independent merchants, resulting in a wide variety of liveries. Rakes of up to 150 wagons were common when moving coal from collieries to regional marshalling yards. The Dapol model reproduces these historic wagons with accurate livery and detailing.
