Manufacturer description

Up until the 1970s coal was the predominant fuel of the UK and the demand was met by a multitude of coal mines spread all over the country. Rail was the principal means of distributing the coal and the 1923 RCH standard design of 12 ton 7 plank wagons with opening end doors were used widely for this purpose until superseded by the larger steel bodied hoppers in the late 1940s.

Many 7 plank wagons were privately owned, either by the mines themselves (the larger mines may have owned hundreds), the coal agents who acted as middlemen between the mines and the merchants and the individual coal merchants themselves. There was therefore a vast collection of liveries either specifically manufactured for larger fleets, or wagons were overprinted as was seen for many of the smaller merchants. Such was the volumes of coal moved in this period that rakes of 150 wagons or more were commonly seen leaving collieries destined for marshalling yards where the coal was organised for regional delivery.

The Dapol Arthur Wharton 7 Plank Wagon is a model of a 1923 RCH standard design 12 ton wagon with opening end doors. It is suitable for OO gauge model railways and is finished in a weathered condition. The model is designed to represent the period of the Big Four railway companies, which was from 1923 to the 1940s.

During this time, coal was the primary fuel for the UK and was transported mainly by rail. Many 7 plank wagons were used for this purpose, with thousands in service across the country. These wagons were often privately owned by coal mines, agents, and merchants, resulting in a wide range of liveries.

The model features a finely moulded body, profiled wheels, and a complete coal load. It is accurately painted in the Arthur Wharton livery. The model measures 82mm in length, 33mm in width, and 35mm in height, and is designed to run on curves with a minimum radius of 1.

The model is built to a high standard and is a great addition to any rolling stock collection. It is a highly detailed representation of a 1923 RCH 7 plank wagon and is suitable for model railways set in the period of the Big Four railway companies.
