Manufacturer description

Up until the 1970s coal was the predominant fuel of the UK and the demand was met by a multitude of coal mines spread all over the country. Rail was the principal means of distributing the coal and the 1923 RCH standard design of 12 ton 7 plank wagons with opening end doors were used widely for this purpose until superseded by the larger steel bodied hoppers in the late 1940s.

Many 7 plank wagons were privately owned, either by the mines themselves (the larger mines may have owned hundreds), the coal agents who acted as middlemen between the mines and the merchants and the individual coal merchants themselves. There was therefore a vast collection of liveries either specifically manufactured for larger fleets, or wagons were overprinted as was seen for many of the smaller merchants. Such was the volumes of coal moved in this period that rakes of 150 wagons or more were commonly seen leaving collieries destined for marshalling yards where the coal was organised for regional delivery.

Dapol 7‑plank open wagon, model “Cardigan Merchantile” in a weathered finish. It is gauge OO, fitted with NEM and tension‑lock couplings and suitable for a minimum radius of 1 chain. The model carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑071‑135 and represents the period of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR). It was produced by a number of companies under the Dapol brand.

The 7‑plank wagons were the standard 12‑ton coal wagons designed to the 1923 RCH specification. Up to the 1970s coal was the main fuel in the United Kingdom and these wooden wagons with opening end doors were the principal means of moving coal from the numerous collieries to regional marshalling yards, before being replaced by larger steel hopper wagons in the late 1940s. Many were owned by mines, coal agents or independent merchants, resulting in a wide variety of liveries, including the Cardigan Merchantile scheme.

The model reproduces the original wagon with a highly detailed, finely moulded body and profiled wheels. It is supplied complete with a coal load and an accurately applied livery, making it a suitable addition to a OO gauge collection of historic freight stock.

Overall dimensions are 82 mm in length over buffers, 33 mm in width and 35 mm in height.
