Manufacturer description

Up until the 1970s coal was the predominant fuel of the UK and the demand was met by a multitude of coal mines spread all over the country. Rail was the principal means of distributing the coal and the 1923 RCH standard design of 12 ton 7 plank wagons with opening end doors were used widely for this purpose until superseded by the larger steel bodied hoppers in the late 1940s.

Many 7 plank wagons were privately owned, either by the mines themselves (the larger mines may have owned hundreds), the coal agents who acted as middlemen between the mines and the merchants and the individual coal merchants themselves. There was therefore a vast collection of liveries either specifically manufactured for larger fleets, or wagons were overprinted as was seen for many of the smaller merchants. Such was the volumes of coal moved in this period that rakes of 150 wagons or more were commonly seen leaving collieries destined for marshalling yards where the coal was organised for regional delivery.

Dapol 7 Plank Wagon United 3154 Weathered is a OO gauge model wagon in a weathered finish. It carries the United livery and bears the manufacturer part number 4F‑071‑143. The wagon is built to the 1923 RCH standard design for 12‑ton, 7‑plank coal wagons and represents the period of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR). It uses NEM/Tension‑lock coupling and is suitable for a minimum radius curve of 1 chain.

The original 7‑plank wagons were the principal means of transporting coal across the United Kingdom until the late 1940s, when larger steel‑bodied hoppers replaced them. They were owned by colliery operators, coal agents and individual merchants, resulting in a wide variety of liveries, including the United scheme reproduced on this model.

The model is highly detailed, with profiled wheels, a finely moulded body, an accurately applied United livery and a coal load. It is suitable for inclusion in both operational and display railway collections.

Measurements: length over buffers 82 mm, width 33 mm, height 35 mm. Minimum radius curve: radius 1 chain.
