Manufacturer description

Open wagons were the first wagons used on the railroad. From the mid 1800s these developed and evolved into a wide range of styles and sizes. In 1923, the Railway Clearing House prepared a set of standards for open top wagons which included load limits and standards of construction.

These standards applied to all company and private owner wagons. The Dapol 7 plank 10ft wheelbase model is based on this 1923 standard end door version, indicating its main use for coal distribution. Tens of thousands of these wagons were produced with many being used well past nationalisation into the 1960s. There are numerous examples on various preserved lines throughout the UK.

Gaugemaster 7 Plank Wagon T by T Tullet & Sons is a model railway wagon measuring 82 mm in length, 33 mm in width and 35 mm in height. It carries the manufacturer part number GM4410203 and represents the pre‑grouping era of British railways.

The model is based on the 1923 Railway Clearing House standard for open‑top wagons with end doors, a design originally intended for coal distribution. This standard set load limits and construction criteria that were applied to both company and private‑owner wagons.

In full size, tens of thousands of 7‑plank wagons with a 10‑ft wheelbase were built and remained in service beyond nationalisation, with many lasting into the 1960s. Numerous examples survive on preserved railway lines throughout the United Kingdom.
