Manufacturer description

Up until the 1970s coal was the predominant fuel of the UK and the demand was met by a multitude of coal mines spread all over the country. Rail was the principal means of distributing the coal and the 1923 RCH standard design of 12 ton 7 plank wagons with opening end doors were used widely for this purpose until superseded by the larger steel bodied hoppers in the late 1940s.

Many 7 plank wagons were privately owned, either by the mines themselves (the larger mines may have owned hundreds), the coal agents who acted as middlemen between the mines and the merchants and the individual coal merchants themselves. There was therefore a vast collection of liveries either specifically manufactured for larger fleets, or wagons were overprinted as was seen for many of the smaller merchants. Such was the volumes of coal moved in this period that rakes of 150 wagons or more were commonly seen leaving collieries destined for marshalling yards where the coal was organised for regional delivery.

Dapol 7‑plank wagon SR 37430 is an OO‑scale model in a weathered finish. It carries the Southern Railway grey livery and measures 82 mm long, 33 mm wide and 35 mm high. The minimum radius curve is listed as radius 1 and the manufacturer part number is 4F‑071‑020. The wagon has been built by various companies under the Dapol brand.

The model represents the 1923 Railway Clearing House standard 12‑ton, 7‑plank wagon with opening end doors that was widely used for coal transport across the United Kingdom. Up to the 1970s coal was the dominant fuel, and these wooden wagons were the principal means of moving coal from the many collieries to marshalling yards, where rakes of 150 wagons or more were often assembled for regional distribution. They were later superseded by larger steel‑bodied hoppers in the late 1940s.

The period depicted by the model corresponds to the era of the “Big Four” railway companies – the LNER, LMS, GWR and Southern Railway – during which privately owned coal mines, agents and merchants operated extensive fleets of similarly liveried wagons.
