Manufacturer description

Up until the 1970s coal was the predominant fuel of the UK and the demand was met by a multitude of coal mines spread all over the country. Rail was the principal means of distributing the coal and the 1923 RCH standard design of 12 ton 7 plank wagons with opening end doors were used widely for this purpose until superseded by the larger steel bodied hoppers in the late 1940s.

Many 7 plank wagons were privately owned, either by the mines themselves (the larger mines may have owned hundreds), the coal agents who acted as middlemen between the mines and the merchants and the individual coal merchants themselves. There was therefore a vast collection of liveries either specifically manufactured for larger fleets, or wagons were overprinted as was seen for many of the smaller merchants. Such was the volumes of coal moved in this period that rakes of 150 wagons or more were commonly seen leaving collieries destined for marshalling yards where the coal was organised for regional delivery.

The Dapol 7 Plank Wagon LMS Grey (model 7004) is an OO gauge replica of a 1923 RCH standard 12‑ton coal wagon. It measures 82 mm in length, 33 mm in width and 35 mm in height, and can navigate a minimum radius curve of 1. The wagon carries an LMS grey livery and bears the manufacturer part number 4F‑071‑025. It represents the era of the Big Four railway companies – LNER, LMS, GWR and SR – and was produced by various companies under the Dapol brand.

Historically, the 7‑plank wagon with opening end doors was the principal vehicle for distributing coal across the United Kingdom up to the 1970s, when coal was the dominant fuel. These wagons were owned by coal mines, coal agents and individual merchants, resulting in a wide variety of liveries. Large rakes of up to 150 wagons were commonly assembled at collieries before being marshalled for regional delivery, before being superseded by larger steel‑bodied hoppers in the late 1940s.
