Manufacturer description

The 8 plank wagon was a development of the earlier 7 plank version and was primarily a coal wagon, carrying the less dense forms of coal (coke etc), where the extra height allowed it to carry its full 12 ton capacity. They were built in the late 1920s to the late 1930s and continued into service up to the late 1960s.

To aid unloading and loading they had a door at each side and could be tipped from the one opening end door.

Dapol Letchworth 8 Plank Wagon is a 00 gauge model representing a coal wagon used by Letchworth Electricity Works. The model carries the part number 4F-080-106 and is fitted with NEM tension‑lock couplings. It is depicted in the livery of Letchworth Electricity Works and is intended to illustrate the period of the Big Four railway companies.

The prototype wagon was an evolution of the earlier 7‑plank design, built between the late 1920s and the late 1930s. It was primarily used for lighter coal products such as coke, with an increased height that allowed it to carry a full 12‑ton capacity. The wagons remained in service until the late 1960s and featured side doors for loading and unloading, as well as a tipping mechanism from one end door.

The model is highly detailed, including profiled wheels, a finely moulded body, a coal load, accurately applied livery and NEM pockets with self‑centering couplers. Its dimensions are 82 mm in length over buffer, 33 mm in width and 37 mm in height.
