Manufacturer description

The GWR Manor was a versatile 4-6-0 configured locomotive designed with a lighter axle loading than the existing and popular Grange class which enabled the Manor to operate in regions of the GWR where this was not possible with a locomotive of comparable power.

In all, 30 Manor class locomotives were manufactured at Swindon in two batches: 20 between 1938 and 1939 and then a further 10 post nationalisation in 1950 which were designated 5MT. Although initially the performance of the locomotive was deemed at best mediocre, subtle internal refinements made towards the mid 1950s resulted in a successful and popular locomotive. In all nine examples of the Manor survived into preservation.

Dapol Draycott Manor BR Lined Green (Early Emblem) 78xx Manor Class 4‑6‑0 steam locomotive, model number 7810, is an OO‑scale, DCC sound‑fitted replica finished in pristine condition. It carries a NEM coupling, a die‑cast compensated chassis and a slide‑in PCB for a NEXT‑18 decoder and speaker, allowing tool‑free installation. Electrical pick‑up is provided on all driving and tender wheels, except the front pony truck, which is sprung and cam‑operated for smooth negotiation of R2 curves.

The prototype locomotive was built by the Great Western Railway at Swindon in December 1938, numbered 7810 and named Draycott Manor. It was delivered in GWR lined green with the early crest, had a 4‑6‑0 wheel arrangement and a length of 130 mm (247 mm over buffers). The class comprised 30 locomotives, built in two batches (1938‑39 and 1950), and served British Railways until withdrawal in September 1964, a service life of 25 years.

The model represents the British Railways early crest period and includes features such as a detailed cab interior with screw reverse, firebox glow, a high‑torque motor and Dapol’s proven slow‑speed mechanism. It is suitable for local passenger and freight layouts and reflects the historical versatility of the GWR Manor class, which was designed for lighter axle loading and operated on routes where heavier locomotives could not run.
