Manufacturer description

The GWR Manor was a versatile 4-6-0 configured locomotive designed with a lighter axle loading than the existing and popular Grange class which enabled the Manor to operate in regions of the GWR where this was not possible with a locomotive of comparable power.

In all, 30 Manor class locomotives were manufactured at Swindon in two batches: 20 between 1938 and 1939 and then a further 10 post nationalisation in 1950 which were designated 5MT. Although initially the performance of the locomotive was deemed at best mediocre, subtle internal refinements made towards the mid 1950s resulted in a successful and popular locomotive. In all nine examples of the Manor survived into preservation.

Dapol Hook Norton Manor BR Lined Black (Early Emblem) is a 78xx Manor Class 4‑6‑0 steam locomotive model, running number 7823. It is finished in a pristine lined black livery with the early British Railways emblem and measures 130 mm in length. The model is gauge OO, fitted with DCC (except the front pony truck) and uses a NEM close‑coupling. Power is picked up from all driving and tender wheels, and the minimum curve it can negotiate is a 2nd radius of 438 mm.

The prototype locomotive was built by British Railways at Swindon in December 1950, entered service in 1950 and was withdrawn in July 1964 after 13 years. It belonged to the Great Western Railway 7800 “Manor” class, a 4‑6‑0 design with lighter axle loading than the Grange class, allowing operation on routes with lower weight restrictions. A total of 30 Manors were produced, and nine have survived in preservation.

The model incorporates a die‑cast compensated chassis, a detailed cab interior with a screw reverse, and a sprung front pony truck that operates on a cam for smooth running on tight curves. A slide‑in printed‑circuit board provides tool‑free installation of a NEXT‑18 DCC decoder and a no‑solder speaker connection; the board is accessed through the smoke box door. Electrical connections between locomotive and tender are moulded into the push‑fit coupling, eliminating external wires and wiper‑type contacts. Additional features include firebox glow, Dapol’s slow‑speed mechanism and a high‑torque motor.

Overall dimensions are 247 mm over buffers, with a length of 130 mm for the model itself. The manufacturer part number is 4S‑001‑004S and the product is described as representing the British Railways early crest period.
