Manufacturer description

The GWR Manor was a versatile 4-6-0 configured locomotive designed with a lighter axle loading than the existing and popular Grange class which enabled the Manor to operate in regions of the GWR where this was not possible with a locomotive of comparable power.

In all, 30 Manor class locomotives were manufactured at Swindon in two batches: 20 between 1938 and 1939 and then a further 10 post nationalisation in 1950 which were designated 5MT. Although initially the performance of the locomotive was deemed at best mediocre, subtle internal refinements made towards the mid 1950s resulted in a successful and popular locomotive. In all nine examples of the Manor survived into preservation.

Dapol Fringford Manor is a 1 inch (HO) gauge model of Great Western Railway 78xx Class locomotive No. 7814, named Fringford Manor. The model is DCC‑ready (NEXT‑18 decoder) with a pristine green finish, NEM couplings, and a length of 130 mm over the buffers. It runs on 12 V DC track supply, features a die‑cast compensated chassis, and has power pick‑up on all driving and tender wheels. The slide‑in PCB in the smokebox provides tool‑free decoder installation and a no‑solder speaker connection, while the sprung front pony truck and cam‑operated mechanism allow smooth negotiation of 2nd‑radius (438 mm) curves. The model measures 247 mm over the buffers and includes detailed cab interior, firebox glow and Dapol’s proven slow‑speed, high‑torque motor.

The prototype locomotive was built by GWR Swindon Works in January 1939 and was withdrawn in September 1965 after 26 years of service with the Great Western Railway. Designed by Charles Collett, the 4‑6‑0 Manor class was intended for local passenger and freight duties on routes with lighter axle loading, and 30 examples were produced in two batches (20 in 1938‑39 and 10 in 1950). Nine of the original locomotives have survived into preservation. The Manor class represented the “Big Four” era of British railways.

The model draws on original GA drawings and incorporates refinements from Dapol’s Mogul line, including a compensated chassis, conductive drawbar for tender‑wheel pick‑up, and a slide‑in PCB for easy DCC fitting. It is supplied with a pristine finish, GWR green livery, and is suitable for both static display and operation on model railways.
