Manufacturer description

The GWR Manor was a versatile 4-6-0 configured locomotive designed with a lighter axle loading than the existing and popular Grange class which enabled the Manor to operate in regions of the GWR where this was not possible with a locomotive of comparable power.

In all, 30 Manor class locomotives were manufactured at Swindon in two batches: 20 between 1938 and 1939 and then a further 10 post nationalisation in 1950 which were designated 5MT. Although initially the performance of the locomotive was deemed at best mediocre, subtle internal refinements made towards the mid 1950s resulted in a successful and popular locomotive. In all nine examples of the Manor survived into preservation.

Dapol Fringford Manor is an OO gauge model of Great Western Railway locomotive No. 7814, a 78xx Manor class 4‑6‑0 steam engine. The model is presented in GWR green livery with GWR lettering and is fitted with DCC sound. It is supplied in a pristine finish.

The model measures 130 mm in length and rides on a die‑cast compensated chassis. It uses NEM close‑coupling, has a minimum curve radius of the second radius (438 mm) and features power pickup on all driving and tender wheels apart from the front pony truck. The locomotive is powered by a high‑torque motor and includes Dapol’s proven slow‑speed mechanism.

The prototype locomotive was built in January 1939 at Swindon Works, designed by Charles Collett and operated by the Great Western Railway. It was withdrawn in September 1965 after 26 years of service. A total of 30 Manor class locomotives were built, of which nine have survived into preservation.

Key modelling features include a detailed cab interior with screw reverse, a sprung front pony truck that operates on a cam for easy negotiation of R2 curves, and a slide‑in PCB that provides tool‑free installation of a NEXT‑18 DCC decoder and a no‑solder speaker connection. The tender‑to‑locomotive drawbar incorporates moulded electrical connections within the coupling, eliminating wired plugs and unreliable wiper‑type contacts. Additional details such as firebox glow are also provided.

Overall dimensions are 247 mm over buffers, with a length over buffers of 247 mm and a model length of 130 mm. The locomotive runs on 2‑rail DCC track and is supplied fully DCC sound fitted.
