Manufacturer description

The GWR Manor was a versatile 4-6-0 configured locomotive designed with a lighter axle loading than the existing and popular Grange class which enabled the Manor to operate in regions of the GWR where this was not possible with a locomotive of comparable power.

In all, 30 Manor class locomotives were manufactured at Swindon in two batches: 20 between 1938 and 1939 and then a further 10 post nationalisation in 1950 which were designated 5MT. Although initially the performance of the locomotive was deemed at best mediocre, subtle internal refinements made towards the mid 1950s resulted in a successful and popular locomotive. In all nine examples of the Manor survived into preservation.

Dapol Torquay Manor is a 4‑6‑0 GWR Manor Class model locomotive in a 78xx series, finished in a pristine GWR green livery with the shirt‑button emblem. The model is DCC fitted, uses a 2‑rail track supply and measures 130 mm in length (247 mm over buffers). It incorporates a die‑cast compensated chassis, a slide‑in PCB for tool‑free installation of a NEXT‑18 decoder, and electrical pick‑up on all driving and tender wheels, including a conductive drawbar within the close‑coupling push‑fit coupling.

The prototype, number 7800 Torquay Manor, was built by the Great Western Railway at Swindon in January 1938 and entered service that same month. It served the GWR (later British Railways) for 26 years before withdrawal in August 1964. A total of 30 Manor class locomotives were produced between 1938‑1939 and 1950, all designed by Charles Collett for local passenger and freight work, with nine examples surviving in preservation.

The model reflects the period of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR) and includes features such as a detailed cab interior with screw reverse, a sprung front pony truck that handles 2nd radius curves (438 mm), firebox glow, a slow‑speed mechanism and a high‑torque motor. The manufacturer part number is 4S‑001‑001D.
