Manufacturer description

The GWR Manor was a versatile 4-6-0 configured locomotive designed with a lighter axle loading than the existing and popular Grange class which enabled the Manor to operate in regions of the GWR where this was not possible with a locomotive of comparable power.

In all, 30 Manor class locomotives were manufactured at Swindon in two batches: 20 between 1938 and 1939 and then a further 10 post nationalisation in 1950 which were designated 5MT. Although initially the performance of the locomotive was deemed at best mediocre, subtle internal refinements made towards the mid 1950s resulted in a successful and popular locomotive. In all nine examples of the Manor survived into preservation.

Dapol Draycott Manor is a 4‑6‑0 steam locomotive model representing GWR Manor Class No. 7810 in BR Lined Green with the early crest. The model is DCC ready (NEXT‑18 decoder) with a pristine finish, runs on 12 V DC track, and measures 130 mm over buffers. It uses NEM couplings, has electrical pick‑up on all driving and tender wheels, and can negotiate a minimum radius of 438 mm (2nd radius). The chassis is die‑cast and compensated, the cab interior includes a screw reverse, and the front pony truck is sprung with a cam for smooth curve running. A slide‑in PCB provides tool‑free DCC installation and a no‑solder speaker connection; the tender‑to‑locomotive drawbar incorporates moulded electrical contacts, eliminating external wiring.

The real locomotive was built in December 1938 at Swindon Works for the Great Western Railway and withdrawn in September 1964, giving it 25 years of service with British Railways. Designed by Charles Collett, the Manor class was a lighter‑axle‑load 4‑6‑0 intended for routes where the larger Grange class could not operate. Thirty examples were produced in two batches (twenty in 1938‑39 and ten in 1950 as 5MT); after modest early performance they were refined in the mid‑1950s and became well regarded. Nine locomotives survive in preservation.

Model specifications include a length over buffers of 247 mm, a powered pony truck, firebox glow, Dapol’s proven slow‑speed mechanism and high‑torque motor, and a manufacturer part number 4S‑001‑006. The model accurately reproduces the British Railways early crest period and incorporates original GWR drawing details for authenticity.
