Manufacturer description

he GWR Manor was a versatile 4-6-0 configured locomotive designed with a lighter axle loading than the existing and popular Grange class which enabled the Manor to operate in regions of the GWR where this was not possible with a locomotive of comparable power.

In all, 30 Manor class locomotives were manufactured at Swindon in two batches: 20 between 1938 and 1939 and then a further 10 post nationalisation in 1950 which were designated 5MT. Although initially the performance of the locomotive was deemed at best mediocre, subtle internal refinements made towards the mid 1950s resulted in a successful and popular locomotive. In all nine examples of the Manor survived into preservation.

Dapol Torquay Manor reproduces the Great Western Railway 7800 “Manor” class 4‑6‑0 steam locomotive, number 7800, in a 1:32 (130 mm) scale. The model is presented in the original GWR green livery with a monogram emblem and a pristine finish. It is DCC‑ready (NEXT‑18 decoder) and includes a slide‑in PCB that allows tool‑free installation of the decoder and a no‑solder speaker connection. Electrical pickup is provided on all driving wheels of the locomotive and on all tender wheels, except the front pony truck, which is sprung and cam‑operated for smooth negotiation of 2‑radius (438 mm) curves.

The locomotive’s chassis is die‑cast and compensated, and the cab interior features a screw reverse. The tender is coupled to the locomotive with a push‑fit coupling that incorporates reliable electrical connections, eliminating the need for separate wiring plugs. Additional details include firebox glow, a high‑torque motor, and Dapol’s slow‑speed mechanism.

Historically, the real 7800 “Torquay Manor” was built by GWR Swindon Works in January 1938, entered service that same year and was withdrawn in August 1964 after 26 years of operation. Thirty examples of the Manor class were produced, of which nine have survived into preservation. The model represents the period of the British “Big Four” railway companies.
