Manufacturer description

The GWR Manor was a versatile 4-6-0 configured locomotive designed with a lighter axle loading than the existing and popular Grange class which enabled the Manor to operate in regions of the GWR where this was not possible with a locomotive of comparable power.

In all, 30 Manor class locomotives were manufactured at Swindon in two batches: 20 between 1938 and 1939 and then a further 10 post nationalisation in 1950 which were designated 5MT. Although initially the performance of the locomotive was deemed at best mediocre, subtle internal refinements made towards the mid 1950s resulted in a successful and popular locomotive. In all nine examples of the Manor survived into preservation.

Dapol Hook Norton Manor BR Lined Black (Early Emblem) 78xx Manor Class 4‑6‑0 steam locomotive No. 7823 is a ready‑to‑run DCC model with a DCC‑18 decoder fitted. The locomotive is finished in pristine condition, carries the running number 7823 and bears the name Hook Norton Manor in a lined black livery with the early British Railways crest.

The model measures 130 mm in length, uses a NEM coupling, and can negotiate a minimum radius of 2nd radius (438 mm). Power is supplied to all wheels except the front pony truck, which is sprung and driven by a cam mechanism for smooth operation on tighter curves. The model is powered by steam‑type sound, with a slide‑in PCB for tool‑free decoder installation and a sugar‑cube speaker enclosure.

The prototype was built in December 1950 at Swindon Works for British Railways and was withdrawn in July 1964 after 13 years of service. It belonged to the Great Western Railway 7800 “Manor” class, a 4‑6‑0 design by Charles Collett intended for lighter axle loading on routes unsuitable for the larger Grange class. Thirty locomotives were produced, nine of which have survived in preservation.

Technical details for the Dapol model include a die‑cast compensated chassis, detailed cab interior with screw reverse, electrical pick‑up on all driving and tender wheels, firebox glow, and Dapol’s proven slow‑speed mechanism with a high‑torque motor. The manufacturer part number is 4S‑001‑004 and the model represents the British Railways early crest period.
