Manufacturer description

The GWR Manor was a versatile 4-6-0 configured locomotive designed with a lighter axle loading than the existing and popular Grange class which enabled the Manor to operate in regions of the GWR where this was not possible with a locomotive of comparable power.

In all, 30 Manor class locomotives were manufactured at Swindon in two batches: 20 between 1938 and 1939 and then a further 10 post nationalisation in 1950 which were designated 5MT. Although initially the performance of the locomotive was deemed at best mediocre, subtle internal refinements made towards the mid 1950s resulted in a successful and popular locomotive. In all nine examples of the Manor survived into preservation.

Dapol Hinton Manor BR Black (Early Emblem) 78xx Manor Class 4-6-0 steam locomotive model, number 7819, is a DCC fitted, 00‑scale (130 mm length) kit presented in pristine condition. The model carries the British Railways early crest black livery, uses NEM couplings, and has a minimum radius of 438 mm (2nd radius). Power is picked up from all wheels except the front pony truck, which is sprung and cam‑operated for reliable running on R2 curves.

The prototype locomotive was built in February 1939 at Swindon Works for the Great Western Railway, later operated by British Railways, and withdrawn in November 1965 after 26 years of service. It was one of 30 Manor class 4‑6‑0 locomotives designed by Charles Collett, intended for local passenger and freight duties where a lower axle load was required. Nine of the original locomotives survived into preservation.

Key model features include a die‑cast compensated chassis, a detailed cab interior with screw reverse, a slide‑in PCB for a NEXT‑18 DCC decoder and a no‑solder speaker connection, and a conductive drawbar with push‑fit coupling that supplies electricity to both locomotive and tender wheels. Additional details are firebox glow, a proven slow‑speed mechanism, and a high‑torque motor.

Overall dimensions are 247 mm over the buffers, with a length over buffers of 130 mm for the locomotive itself. The model is built using original GA drawings and incorporates Dapol’s slide‑in PCB technology and sugar‑cube speaker enclosure, providing tool‑free DCC installation and reliable sound performance.
