Manufacturer description

The GWR Manor was a versatile 4-6-0 configured locomotive designed with a lighter axle loading than the existing and popular Grange class which enabled the Manor to operate in regions of the GWR where this was not possible with a locomotive of comparable power.

In all, 30 Manor class locomotives were manufactured at Swindon in two batches: 20 between 1938 and 1939 and then a further 10 post nationalisation in 1950 which were designated 5MT. Although initially the performance of the locomotive was deemed at best mediocre, subtle internal refinements made towards the mid 1950s resulted in a successful and popular locomotive. In all nine examples of the Manor survived into preservation.

Dapol Hinton Manor BR Black (Early Emblem) 78xx Manor Class 4‑6‑0 steam locomotive model, number 7819, is presented in OO gauge with a pristine finish. It is DCC sound fitted, featuring a slide‑in PCB for a NEXT‑18 decoder and a sugar‑cube speaker enclosure, allowing tool‑free installation. The die‑cast compensated chassis includes a detailed cab interior with a screw reverse, a sprung front pony truck that negotiates R2 (438 mm) curves, and electrical pick‑up on all driving and tender wheels. The model measures 130 mm in length (247 mm over buffers) and uses NEM coupling with a conductive draw‑bar providing reliable tender connections. It represents the British Railways early‑crest livery and includes firebox glow, a slow‑speed mechanism and a high‑torque motor.

The prototype, GWR Manor class locomotive No. 7819 Hinton Manor, was built by the Great Western Railway at Swindon in February 1939 and withdrawn in November 1965 after 26 years of service with British Railways. Designed by Charles Collett, the 4‑6‑0 locomotive had a lighter axle loading than the Grange class, enabling operation on routes with lower weight limits. A total of 30 Manor class engines were built between 1938 and 1939, with a further ten produced in 1950 as 5MT. Nine examples survived into preservation. The model reflects the locomotive’s early‑crest BR black livery.
