Manufacturer description

The GWR Manor was a versatile 4-6-0 configured locomotive designed with a lighter axle loading than the existing and popular Grange class which enabled the Manor to operate in regions of the GWR where this was not possible with a locomotive of comparable power.

In all, 30 Manor class locomotives were manufactured at Swindon in two batches: 20 between 1938 and 1939 and then a further 10 post nationalisation in 1950 which were designated 5MT. Although initially the performance of the locomotive was deemed at best mediocre, subtle internal refinements made towards the mid 1950s resulted in a successful and popular locomotive. In all nine examples of the Manor survived into preservation.

Dapol OO‑scale model of Great Western Railway 7800 “Manor” class locomotive No. 7800 Torquay Manor, painted in GWR green with monogram badge. The model is 130 mm long, has a die‑cast compensated chassis, NEM coupling, and a minimum curve radius of 438 mm (2nd radius). All driving and tender wheels are fitted with electrical pick‑up except the front pony truck, which is sprung and operates on a cam for smooth negotiation of R2 curves.

The locomotive is DCC sound fitted, featuring a slide‑in PCB that allows tool‑free installation of a NEXT‑18 decoder and a no‑solder speaker connection. Electrical connections are moulded into the close‑coupling push‑fit coupling, eliminating separate plugs. Other details include a detailed cab interior with screw reverse, firebox glow, a high‑torque motor and Dapol’s proven slow‑speed mechanism.

Historical data represented by the model: built in January 1938 (01/01/1938), withdrawn in August 1964 (01/08/1964), giving a service life of 26 years. The original class comprised 30 locomotives built at Swindon Works for the Great Western Railway, later operated by British Railways, with a 4‑6‑0 wheel arrangement and designed by Charles Collett for mixed local passenger and freight duties.

Manufacturer part number 4S‑001‑001S. The model finishes in pristine condition and is intended to represent the “Big Four” railway era.
