Rapido Trains UK OO gauge model of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Class 25 ‘Ironclad’ 0‑6‑0 No. 929 in post‑1901 lined goods livery, equipped with DCC Sound (manufacturer part number 817503). The model represents the pre‑grouping era of British steam locomotives.
The locomotive is fitted for operation on second‑radius curves of 438 mm or greater and includes a range of detailed features: a one‑piece boiler handrail, Ramsbottom safety valves, a core‑less motor with flywheel, a 21‑pin decoder socket in the tender, a large tender‑mounted speaker, MoPower stay‑alive circuitry, plunger locomotive pickups, tender wheel‑bearing pickups, dynamic firebox flicker and NEM pockets at both front and rear.
Historically, the Class 25 ‘Ironclad’ was introduced after William Barton Wright became Locomotive Superintendent of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway in 1875. An initial order was placed with Kitson & Co. and 22 locomotives were delivered between summer 1876 and early 1878. Further batches were supplied by Sharp, Stewart & Co., Vulcan, Beyer Peacock and by the L&Y’s own works at Miles Platting, bringing the total to 280 examples by 1887. Although designed for freight, the class proved effective for mixed‑traffic duties and earned the nickname ‘Ironclad’ after contemporary battleships. By the 1920s most had been converted to saddle‑tank shunters; the remaining engines passed to the LMS as power class 2F and were withdrawn from service between 1930 and 1959. The last survivor, L&Y No. 957 (later known as the ‘Green Dragon’), was bought by Tony Cox on 01/01/1960, moved to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway on 01/01/1965 and appeared in the 01/01/1970 film *The Railway Children*.
The Rapido rendition will be offered in several liveries, including two that reflect different periods of the locomotive’s preservation history.
