Rapido Class 25 ‘Ironclad’ 0‑6‑0 No.52043 – Lancashire & Yorkshire – British Railways Early Crest – OO gauge model, Manufacturer Part Number 817010.

Suitable for operation on 2nd‑radius curves of 438 mm or greater. Features include an L&Y‑style smokebox door, a single boiler handrail, Ramsbottom safety valves, a core‑less motor with flywheel, a 21‑pin decoder socket in the tender, a large tender‑mounted speaker, MoPower stay‑alive circuitry, plunger locomotive pickups, tender‑wheel bearing pickups, dynamic firebox flicker, and NEM pockets at both front and rear.

The prototype locomotives were ordered by William Barton Wright after his appointment as Locomotive Superintendent of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1875. Kitson & Co supplied the first 22 engines between the summer of 1876 and early 1878, followed by further batches from Sharp, Stewart & Co, Vulcan and Beyer‑Peacock, with the final unit delivered in 1887. A total of 280 Class 25 ‘Ironclad’ 0‑6‑0 locomotives were built; although designed for freight they proved capable of mixed‑traffic duties and earned the nickname ‘Ironclad’ after contemporary battleships. Later repurposed as saddle‑tank engines for local goods and shunting, the class survived into LMS service as power class 2F and, after withdrawals beginning in 1930, the last original member (No.52044, L&Y 957) was retired in 1959. The preserved locomotive, known as the ‘Green Dragon’, entered private ownership in 1960 and has appeared in several BBC productions.

Rapido Trains UK will offer the OO‑gauge Class 25 model in a range of liveries, including two that represent different periods of its preservation history.
