Manufacturer description

BR’s standard 25kV AC electric locomotive of the late-1960s, developed using experience gained with the earlier ‘AL1’ to ‘AL5’ classes. A handful of ‘86s’ remain in use today both in the UK and overseas. This latest variant features a number of improvements over our previous Class 86s, including separately switchable tail lights in DCC mode. It focuses on the previously overlooked mixed traffic ‘86/4’ and freight-only ‘86/6’ sub-classes modified from the mid-1980s onwards.

Models are supplied with either a Faiveley (*) or Brecknell Willis high-speed (+) pantograph.

The Heljan Class 86/2 model locomotive, 86261 'Rail Charter Partnership', is a representation of a British Rail Class 86 electric locomotive in EWS Red/Gold livery. The model is based on the Class 86, a standard 25kV AC electric locomotive developed in the late 1960s by British Rail, with a number of improvements over previous models.

The Class 86 was built by British Rail at Doncaster Works and English Electric at Vulcan Foundry between 1965 and 1966. The model is designed to represent the '86/2' variant, which features a number of modifications made from the mid-1980s onwards. The locomotive is equipped with a variety of features, including finely applied livery details, smooth running motor and flywheel, and working lights.

The model is supplied with a Faiveley or Brecknell Willis high-speed pantograph and is DCC ready with a 21-pin socket. It features NEM couplings, sprung buffers, and is sound ready. Other features of the model include separately switchable tail lights in DCC mode. The Class 86 locomotive remains in use today, both in the UK and overseas, with a handful of examples still in operation.
