Prototype Era
Era 7 (1972 to 1982) British Rail Blue (TOPS)
BR’s standard 25kV AC electric locomotive of the late-1960s, developed using experience gained with the earlier ‘AL1’ to ‘AL5’ classes. A handful of ‘86s’ remain in use today both in the UK and overseas. This latest variant features a number of improvements over our previous Class 86s, including separately switchable tail lights in DCC mode. It focuses on the previously overlooked mixed traffic ‘86/4’ and freight-only ‘86/6’ sub-classes modified from the mid-1980s onwards.
Models are supplied with either a Faiveley (*) or Brecknell Willis high-speed (+) pantograph.
FEATURES
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Heljan Class 86 BR Blue No 86402 is a 00 scale electric locomotive model that represents a British Rail Class 86 in the original British Rail blue TOPS livery. The model carries the Heljan part number 8649 and is supplied with DCC 21 compatibility.
The kit includes finely detailed body, bogie and underframe work, a finescale sprung Faiveley pantograph and sprung Oleo buffers. It is fitted with an all‑wheel drive and pickup system and a powerful smooth‑running five‑pole motor with a flywheel. Tail lights can be switched independently and the cab doors are offered in original or modified form.
The locomotive is designed for “plug and play” conversion to DCC, with enhanced decoration that adds extra printed elements to the body and underframe. It also features independently switchable tail lights and a realistic sprung underframe.
The real Class 86 entered service in August 1965 and the entire fleet was delivered within the following 24 months. Throughout the 1970s the class was used on both express passenger and freight services, later being re‑classified and modified for various freight and parcels duties, with several changes to livery and speed limits up to the mid‑1990s.
