Prototype Era
Era 7 (1972 to 1982) British Rail Blue (TOPS)
BR's standard 25kV AC electric locomotive of the 1960s to 1980s was developed using experience gained with the earlier 'AL1' to 'AL5' classes.
Deployed on many duties from 100mph express passenger trains to fast freight, parcels and mail traffic, many '86s' remain in use today both in the UK and overseas.
Heljan's new model looks back at the as-built 'AL6' machines and Class 86/0s of the 1965-80 period and features a number of improvements over Heljan's previous Class 86s.

Heljan Class 86/0 ‘AL6’ Bo‑Bo electric locomotive model (reference 8655) reproduces British Rail locomotive number 86036 in the original Rail Blue livery with double‑arrow logo, full yellow ends and orange can‑trail stripes. The model is designed for OO gauge and measures 235 mm in length.
The locomotive is DCC ready, fitted with a 21‑pin socket, and operates with all wheels as power pick‑up. It features NEM couplings, sprung buffers, directional lighting and a pristine finish. The minimum curve it can negotiate is the 2nd radius (438 mm).
The prototype, built by BR Doncaster Works and Vulcan Foundry in 1965‑66, belonged to the Class 86 series, of which 100 were produced. It was allocated to the London Midland and Scottish regions and was employed in mixed‑traffic duties, ranging from 100 mph express passenger services to fast freight, parcels and mail trains.
Heljan’s model reflects the as‑built ‘AL6’ machines of the 1965‑80 period and incorporates improvements over earlier Heljan Class 86 releases, including working lights, NEM couplings and sprung buffers.
