Heljan is introducing a new OO scale model of the Class 26 diesel locomotive in BR Blue livery with twin headlights. This model is the first of a series of upgraded Class 26/1 models, which will feature improved mechanical, detail, and electronics. The new model, numbered 26039, is DCC ready with a 21-pin socket and has all-wheel power pickup.

The new Class 26/1 model is designed for operation on radius 2 curves and features a 5-pole motor with flywheel for smooth running. It also includes separately switchable headlights, marker and tail lights, and cab and engine room interior lights. The model has a detachable access panel in the roof and is designed for plug-and-play DCC sound conversion.

The initial release will feature two models: a 1970s version and a mid-1980s version with an Inverness depot 'Highland Rail' emblem. The model will also be available with various body options, including an as-built Class 26/1 with a tablet catcher and recess, unrefurbished locos with the recess plated over, and refurbished dual-braked locos with an air tank cradle between bogies.

The new model features finer body detail and a refined shape, improved bogie detail and relief, and a redesigned and upgraded chassis. It also includes very fine etched radiator grilles and all-new Far North Line versions with twin headlights. The model is available with optional features such as a tablet catcher arm, three-piece miniature snowploughs, and original or plated-over cab door windows.

Heljan plans to release a range of Class 26/1 models covering the entire BR career of the locomotive, from the late 1950s to its withdrawal in 1993. An upgraded Class 26/0 variant is also planned for release in the future.
