The prototype was built by Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company between 1958 and 1959, with a total production run of 47 locomotives. It is a Bo‑Bo diesel‑electric locomotive, operated by British Railways on mixed‑traffic duties until 1994. The model represents the British Rail Blue (TOPS) period and displays the Railfreight grey livery with a red stripe and the ED Westie logo.
