Era 4 (1948 to 1956) British Railways Early Crest
Era 5 (1956 to 1966) British Railways Late Crest
The class 121 and 122 (also known as "Bubble Cars") formed part of the first generation of British DMU's. These units were designed to run on branch lines and secondary routes and were ideal for stations that were not able to have run-round loops due to space.
The class 121 units were built in 1960 by Pressed Steel and the class 122 were built in 1958 by Gloucester RC& W. Lots of these units are still in preservation.
MODEL
These great little models feature lots of details including etched grills, directional lighting, and finely printed external logos and numbering.

Class 122 Bubble Car #55002 Blue & Grey livery
The Dapol model 55006 is a 4 mm OO gauge replica of the British Rail Class 122 diesel multiple‑unit. It is finished in pristine condition and painted in British Rail green with a small warning panel. The model is DCC fitted, includes directional lighting, etched grills, cast wheels in the appropriate livery colour and a tungsten chassis. Power is taken from all wheels and the unit runs on a core‑less motor; it uses NEM/tension‑lock couplings and is supplied with a spares bag containing additional detailing parts. Sound is provided by an STX882106 diesel sound decoder (speaker required).
The prototype was built by Gloucester RC&W in 1958; a total of 29 units were produced for British Railways. Known as a “Bubble Car”, the Class 122 operated on branch lines and secondary routes, reaching a maximum speed of 70 mph and featuring a Bo‑Bo wheel arrangement. The model represents the early crest era (1957‑1966).
Measurements are 267 mm over buffers, 34 mm wide and 49 mm high. The model is suitable for use on 2‑rail DCC track.
