Please see the full DCC Sound specification of the model below:

The model is already significantly advanced and currently at the tooling stage, having been in the works for the past few years. All variants of the 56 are being tooled, to accurately cover all 135 locomotives produced between 1976 and 1984.

The Cavalex 56 has been designed completely from scratch, based on original works drawings from both Electroputere and BREL. Having incorporated numerous innovations into the model which they plan to showcase in the future. Whilst the 56 has been released by other manufacturers in the past, it was an obvious choice for Cavalex given the prototype ran with all of the released and forthcoming wagons, and being 56 fans, Cavalex wanted to capture the distinct differences between the four main versions of the ‘Grid’. They have deliberately chosen prototypes that don’t conflict with existing models of the class, whilst also releasing liveries never seen in 4mm scale. This extends to liveries not seen on certain versions; for example Red Stripe Railfreight on a Romanian built Class 56.

The locomotive will incorporate the following features:

The Cavalex 56 will be produced to the same high standard of finish as the highly regarded PGA and BBA/BLA wagons, incorporating similar levels of detail and innovation.

Cavalex Models Class 56 091 ‘Driver Wayne Gaskell’ (DCR) is a limited‑edition DCC‑sound diesel locomotive released as part of the Rails of Sheffield range. It represents the rebuilding period of the British Rail Class 56 fleet and carries the manufacturer part number CM‑56091‑DCR‑SOUND.

The model features a distinctive fabricated cab, cut‑away buffer beam, diamond‑mesh side and roof grilles, steel cab frames, an extra air‑conditioning vent on the second‑man’s side and etched nameplates bearing the driver’s name. Photo‑etched components are used throughout, and the bogies are split‑part rather than one‑piece mouldings for improved detail.

Audio is provided by a custom ESU sound project recorded and programmed for DCC, using a newly developed speaker unit that combines a passive radiator with a sugar‑cube speaker. The sound interacts with independent roof fans driven by quiet coreless motors, and hall‑sensor‑controlled flange squeal is automatically generated when the wheels enter sharp curves. Lighting is fully independent, offering realistic brightness levels for parked, yard, light‑engine and on‑train modes.

Mechanically the locomotive incorporates an alloy chassis, a 5‑pole motor with twin flywheels geared for prototypical speeds, a 21‑pin DCC interface with removable roof panel for easy fitting, and the ability to pull authentic wagon rakes. Optional EM/P4 wheelset packs and motor‑operated roof fans can be added. The model is produced to the same high standard of finish as Cavalex’s PGA and BBA/BLA wagons.

The locomotive was demonstrated at the Rails of Sheffield open day in August 2022 and is expected to be available for order from 19 October 2025.
