Manufacturer description

After the end of the Second World War, Scammell Lorries looked at the Mechanical Horse, which was basically unchanged from its 1934 design, realised that something more modern was called for and set about re-designing the vehicle. Later Scammell offered diesel engines. These were the Perkins 4-199 for 3-ton and P4 and P4203 for six ton. The low mounting of the engine and other design changes made the Scarab more stable and its rounded all steel cab was more comfortable for drivers. The Scarab lasted in production until 1967.

Oxford Diecast Railfreight Yellow Scammell Scarab Van Trailer – 1:76 scale (model number 76RAB009) is a die‑cast representation of a British Railways early‑crest freight trailer. The model is painted in the traditional yellow livery used by British Rail freight services in the post‑war era.

The real Scammell Scarab was developed after the Second World War as an updated version of the Mechanical Horse, incorporating a low‑mounted Perkins diesel engine (4‑199 for three‑ton capacity or P4/P4203 for six‑ton capacity). The all‑steel rounded cab provided a more stable and comfortable ride for drivers. Production of the Scarab continued until 1967.

This 1:76 ( OO ) scale model is intended for collectors and railway enthusiasts who wish to display a period‑accurate example of a mid‑20th‑century British freight trailer. It reflects the design and colour scheme of the early British Railways freight fleet.
