Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)
Entering service with the LB&SCR as No. 78 Knowle, the locomotive was moved into storage by the Southern Railway in September 1935. When the Isle of Wight Railway found itself with a shortage of light engines, Knowle was overhauled, fitted with an extended bunker and shipped to the island in May 1929, taking the number W4 and the name Bembridge. Push-pull equipment was fitted and the Terrier worked the lighter lines out of Newport, being renumbered as W14 in April 1932.
The opening of a bigger 26ft turntable at Bembridge in 1936 allowed heavier 4-4-2T O2 locomotives to work the smaller lines and W14 Bembridge became surplus to requirements, being returned to the mainland in May that year.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Class A1X Terrier 0-6-0T 32635 Brighton Works in BR LBSCR-style improved engine green
Hornby Southern Railway (SR) model “Terrier” 0‑6‑0T, numbered W14 “Bembridge”, represents a Class A1/A1X locomotive built by Brighton Works between 1872 and 1880. The model is painted in green, measures 105 mm in length and runs on an OO gauge track. It features a 3‑pole skew‑wound motor with all‑wheel power pickup, a 6‑pin NEM (651) DCC socket, and uses NEM / tension‑lock couplings. The minimum curve radius is the first radius of 371 mm. The product carries Hornby part number R3847X and is intended to depict the era of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).
Historically the locomotive entered service with the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway as No 78 “Knowle”. It was stored by the Southern Railway in September 1935, but earlier, in May 1929, it was overhauled, fitted with an extended bunker and sent to the Isle of Wight Railway, where it became No W4 “Bembridge”. After being equipped with push‑pull gear it operated lighter lines from Newport and was renumbered W14 in April 1932. The opening of a larger 26‑ft turntable at Bembridge in 1936 allowed heavier O2 4‑4‑2T engines to take over, making W14 surplus; it returned to the mainland in May 1936.
