Manufacturer description

Built at Brighton Works during December 1876 at a cost of around £1,875.00, 48 Leadenhall was allocated to New Cross from 9 December 1876. But when the Great Eastern, Metropolitan and District railways took greater control of running East London line services during the mid 1880s, the locomotive was transferred to Eastbourne for the Hailsham and Lewes local services.

Moved on to Portsmouth in 1890, 48 Leadenhall worked the East Southsea and Hayling Island branch line services until August 1901, when the locomotive was relegated to the LB&SCR Duplicate List.

Hornby model of the London Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) Terrier locomotive No 48 “Leadenhall”. The model is an OO gauge static‑diesel‑control (DCC) ready item with a six‑pin socket, painted finish and a three‑pole skew wound motor.

The locomotive is supplied in the improved engine green colour with an umber livery. It has a length of 105 mm, a minimum radius curve of 371 mm (first radius) and power is picked up from all wheels. Coupling is to the NEM/Tension lock standard. The wheel arrangement is 0‑6‑0T, representing the A1/A1X “Terriers” class designed by William Stroudley, and the model is intended to portray a pre‑grouping steam engine.

The prototype was built at Brighton Works in December 1876 at a cost of about £1 875. It was allocated to New Cross on 9 December 1876. In the mid‑1880s the locomotive was transferred to Eastbourne for the Hailsham and Lewes local services, later moving to Portsmouth in 1890 where it worked the East Southsea and Hayling Island branch lines until August 1901, when it was placed on the LB&SCR duplicate list.

Terriers were constructed between 1872 and 1880, with a total of 17 locomotives produced by Brighton Works. The Hornby part number for this model is R3811.
