Manufacturer description

Entering service with the LB&SCR as No. 68 Clapham, the locomotive was sold to LSWR in March 1903 for use on the new Lyme Regis branch, receiving the number 735. Unfortunately, the Terrier was not suited to the sharply curved and steeply graded line and 735 was moved to light shunting and other branch line duties until late 1911, when the locomotive was reboilered.

Re-entering traffic the following summer, minus condensing gear and exhaust steam pipes, 735 was engaged on the Chard branch until it was fitted with motor-train gear for use on the Lee-on-Solent Light Railway.

Hornby LSWR model number R3846X represents the A1/A1X “Terrier” class locomotive No. 735 in 00 gauge. The kit is painted green, measures 105 mm in length and runs on a 3‑pole skew‑wound motor with power pickup from all wheels. It uses a 6‑pin DCC socket (NEM 651) and fits standard NEM or tension‑lock couplings. The minimum radius curve is specified as the first radius of 371 mm.

The historic locomotive was built at Brighton Works between 1872 and 1880, with 17 examples produced. Originally entering service with the LB&SCR as No. 68 “Clapham”, it was sold to the LSWR in March 1903 and renumbered 735 for use on the Lyme Regis branch. The engine proved unsuitable for the sharply curved and steeply graded line and was reassigned to light shunting and other branch duties.

In late 1911 the locomotive was reboilered and returned to traffic the following summer, now without condensing gear and exhaust steam pipes. It was allocated to the Chard branch before being fitted with motor‑train gear for operation on the Lee‑on‑Solent Light Railway. The model depicts the pre‑grouping period.
