Prototype Era

Manufacturer description

The first freight wagons for the railway were open wagons. Initially, as the tractive effort of the locomotives was relatively low, these wagons were generally low sided with only one or two planks acting as sides and carrying capacity of just a couple of tons.

As the technology progressed, so did demand for rail freight and with the increased power of the steam engines came bigger wagons. The 5 plank wagon was perhaps the most common general goods wagon with tens of thousands being built by all the rail companies between 1910 and the early 1930s.

MODEL
These model 5 plank wagons are highly detailed and will be a great addition to your rolling stock.

Dapol have modelled two designs, one based on a 9' wheelbase with a capacity of 10 tons and one based on a 10' wheelbase with a 12 ton capacity

Dapol 5 Plank Wagon – 9ft Wheelbase, Brymbo Steel livery, weathered finish. Model gauge OO, length over buffer 73 mm, width 33 mm, height 33 mm. Manufacturer part number 4F‑052‑034. The kit represents the freight wagons used during the era of the Big Four railway companies – LNER, LMS, GWR and SR.

The original 5‑plank wagons were the most common general‑goods wagons on British railways, with tens of thousands built between 1910 and the early 1930s. They evolved from low‑sided, two‑plank designs as locomotive power increased, offering capacities of ten to twelve tons.

Dapol offers two variants: a 9‑foot wheelbase version capable of carrying ten tons and a 10‑foot wheelbase version rated at twelve tons. The model includes profiled wheels, accurately applied Brymbo Steel livery, highly detailed body moulding and NEM pockets fitted with self‑centering couplings.

Overall dimensions are length 73 mm, width 33 mm and height 33 mm, matching the prototype’s proportions for use in OO gauge layouts.
