Manufacturer description

The first freight wagons for the railway were open wagons. Initially, as the tractive effort of the locomotives was relatively low, these wagons were generally low sided with only one or two planks acting as sides and carrying capacity of just a couple of tons.

As the technology progressed, so did demand for rail freight and with the increased power of the steam engines came bigger wagons. The 5 plank wagon was perhaps the most common general goods wagon with tens of thousands being built by all the rail companies between 1910 and the early 1930s.

The Dapol Cliffe Hall 5 Plank Wagon is a model of a British railway wagon from the Big Four era. It is available in a weathered finish and is suitable for OO gauge model railways. The model measures 82mm in length, 33mm in width, and 33mm in height.

The real-life 5 plank wagon was a common general goods wagon, with tens of thousands built by British rail companies between 1910 and the early 1930s. It had a 9 or 10 foot wheelbase and a capacity of 10 or 12 tons. The model is available in two versions, each with a different wheelbase and capacity.

The Dapol model features highly detailed body moulding, accurately applied livery, and profiled wheels. It also includes NEM pockets with self-centring couplings for easy linking to other model wagons. The model is designed to be a realistic representation of the real-life 5 plank wagons used by the Big Four rail companies.
