Manufacturer description

The first freight wagons for the railway were open wagons. Initially, as the tractive effort of the locomotives was relatively low, these wagons were generally low sided with only one or two planks acting as sides and carrying capacity of just a couple of tons.

As the technology progressed, so did demand for rail freight and with the increased power of the steam engines came bigger wagons. The 5 plank wagon was perhaps the most common general goods wagon with tens of thousands being built by all the rail companies between 1910 and the early 1930s.

Dapol 5 Plank Wagon in W Robinson livery is an OO‑scale model measuring 73 mm long, 33 mm wide and 33 mm high. The kit is supplied in a pristine finish and carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑052‑021. It represents a freight wagon from the era of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).

The model is available in two variations: one with a 9‑foot wheelbase intended to carry a 10‑ton load, and a second with a 10‑foot wheelbase designed for a 12‑ton capacity. Both versions feature profiled wheels, accurately applied livery, highly detailed body moulding and NEM pockets fitted with self‑centring couplings.

Open‑top 5‑plank wagons were the standard general‑goods vehicle on British railways, with tens of thousands built between 1910 and the early 1930s as locomotive power increased and freight demand grew. This Dapol model replicates those historic wagons for use in model railway collections.
