Manufacturer description

The first freight wagons for the railway were open wagons. Initially, as the tractive effort of the locomotives was relatively low, these wagons were generally low sided with only one or two planks acting as sides and carrying capacity of just a couple of tons.

As the technology progressed, so did demand for rail freight and with the increased power of the steam engines came bigger wagons. The 5 plank wagon was perhaps the most common general goods wagon with tens of thousands being built by all the rail companies between 1910 and the early 1930s.

The 5 plank wagon was a common type of goods wagon in use from the early 20th century. Initially, open wagons were used, but as locomotive power increased, so did the size of the wagons. The 5 plank wagon was a staple of the rail network, with tens of thousands being built between 1910 and the early 1930s.

Dapol's model of the 5 plank wagon is highly detailed and features accurately applied livery and profiled wheels. The model is available in two designs, one with a 9' wheelbase and a 10 ton capacity, and the other with a 10' wheelbase and a 12 ton capacity. The model also features NEM pockets with self-centring couplings for ease of use.

The model measures 82mm in length over the buffer, 33mm in width, and 33mm in height. It is a suitable addition to any rolling stock collection, providing a realistic representation of a common type of goods wagon from the Big Four period.
