Manufacturer description

The first freight wagons for the railway were open wagons. Initially, as the tractive effort of the locomotives was relatively low, these wagons were generally low sided with only one or two planks acting as sides and carrying capacity of just a couple of tons.

As the technology progressed, so did demand for rail freight and with the increased power of the steam engines came bigger wagons. The 5 plank wagon was perhaps the most common general goods wagon with tens of thousands being built by all the rail companies between 1910 and the early 1930s.

The Dapol 5 Plank Wagon 9' Wheelbase in A Telling livery is an OO gauge model (manufacturer part number 4F‑052‑023) representing a pre‑grouping freight wagon.

Historically, 5‑plank wagons were the most common general‑goods wagons, with tens of thousands built by the various railway companies between 1910 and the early 1930s. They began as low‑sided, low‑capacity wagons and grew larger as locomotive power increased.

The model measures 73 mm in length, 33 mm in width and 33 mm in height. It includes profiled wheels, accurately applied livery, highly detailed body moulding, NEM pockets and self‑centring couplings. This version is based on a 9‑ft wheelbase with a nominal 10‑ton capacity.
