Manufacturer description

The first freight wagons for the railway were open wagons. Initially, as the tractive effort of the locomotives was relatively low, these wagons were generally low sided with only one or two planks acting as sides and carrying capacity of just a couple of tons.

As the technology progressed, so did demand for rail freight and with the increased power of the steam engines came bigger wagons. The 5 plank wagon was perhaps the most common general goods wagon with tens of thousands being built by all the rail companies between 1910 and the early 1930s.

Dapol 5 Plank Tom Milner is an OO gauge model wagon, measuring 82 mm in length, 33 mm in width and 33 mm in height. The model is supplied in a pristine finish and carries the manufacturer part number 4F-051-031. It represents a pre‑grouping period freight wagon.

The original freight wagons were open‑sided with one or two planks and a limited carrying capacity, suitable for the low tractive effort of early locomotives. As steam power increased, larger wagons were introduced, and the five‑plank design became the most common general goods wagon, with tens of thousands built between 1910 and the early 1930s.

Dapol have modelled two versions of the five‑plank wagon. One version is based on a 9 ft wheelbase and is rated for a 10‑ton capacity, while the other uses a 10 ft wheelbase and carries a 12‑ton capacity.

Key features include profiled wheels, accurately applied livery, highly detailed body moulding and NEM pockets with self‑centred couplings.

Overall dimensions are length over buffer 82 mm, width 33 mm and height 33 mm.
