Manufacturer description

The first freight wagons for the railway were open wagons. Initially, as the tractive effort of the locomotives was relatively low, these wagons were generally low sided with only one or two planks acting as sides and carrying capacity of just a couple of tons.

As the technology progressed, so did demand for rail freight and with the increased power of the steam engines came bigger wagons. The 5 plank wagon was perhaps the most common general goods wagon with tens of thousands being built by all the rail companies between 1910 and the early 1930s.

MODEL
These model 5 plank wagons are highly detailed and will be a great addition to your rolling stock.

Dapol have modelled two designs, one based on a 9' wheelbase with a capacity of 10 tons and one based on a 10' wheelbase with a 12 ton capacity

Dapol 5‑Plank SR 27344 Weathered is an OO‑scale model freight wagon fitted with DCC. It is finished in a weathered SR brown livery and carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑051‑042. The model represents a typical Southern Railway 5‑plank wagon from the era of the Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).

The wagon measures 82 mm in length over buffers, 33 mm in width and 33 mm in height. It is equipped with profiled wheels, accurately applied livery, highly detailed body moulding and NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings.

Two versions have been modelled: a 9‑foot wheelbase wagon with a 10‑ton capacity and a 10‑foot wheelbase wagon with a 12‑ton capacity. The original 5‑plank design was the most common general‑goods wagon built between 1910 and the early 1930s, initially low‑sided with a modest carrying capacity, later enlarged as locomotive power increased.
