Manufacturer description

The first freight wagons for the railway were open wagons. Initially, as the tractive effort of the locomotives was relatively low, these wagons were generally low sided with only one or two planks acting as sides and carrying capacity of just a couple of tons.

As the technology progressed, so did demand for rail freight and with the increased power of the steam engines came bigger wagons. The 5 plank wagon was perhaps the most common general goods wagon with tens of thousands being built by all the rail companies between 1910 and the early 1930s.

The Dapol 5 Plank Wagon Vinter No.315 is a model of a British railway wagon. It is designed to represent a 5 plank wagon, a common type of general goods wagon built by British rail companies during the Big Four period, from approximately 1910 to the early 1930s.

The model is weathered, giving it a realistic appearance, and comes with a realistic load. It is designed for OO gauge model railways.

The 5 plank wagon was a significant development in the history of British rail freight wagons. Initially, open wagons with low sides and limited carrying capacity were used due to the low power of early locomotives. However, as steam engine technology improved, so did the size and capacity of wagons, with the 5 plank wagon becoming a standard design.

The Dapol model is highly detailed, with features including profiled wheels, accurately applied livery and a highly detailed body moulding. It also has NEM pockets with self-centring couplings. The model measures 82mm in length over the buffers, 33mm in width and 33mm in height.
