Manufacturer description

The first freight wagons for the railway were open wagons. Initially, as the tractive effort of the locomotives was relatively low, these wagons were generally low sided with only one or two planks acting as sides and carrying capacity of just a couple of tons.

As the technology progressed, so did demand for rail freight and with the increased power of the steam engines came bigger wagons. The 5 plank wagon was perhaps the most common general goods wagon with tens of thousands being built by all the rail companies between 1910 and the early 1930s.

The Dapol Kelton Cement 5 Plank Wagon - Weathered is a OO gauge model representing a freight wagon from the Big Four era. The model features a weathered finish and measures 82mm in length, 33mm in width, and 33mm in height.

This type of freight wagon has a long history, with the first open wagons being introduced early in the development of railways. Initially, these wagons were simple and had limited capacity, but as locomotive technology improved, so did the design of the wagons, leading to the widespread use of 5 plank wagons between 1910 and the early 1930s.

The model kit is available in two variants, each with a different wheelbase and capacity. The 9' wheelbase model has a 10 ton capacity, while the 10' wheelbase model has a 12 ton capacity. The model features highly detailed body moulding, NEM pockets with self-centring couplings, and accurately applied livery.
