Accurascale has announced a new OO gauge model of the Class 50 diesel locomotive, specifically 50017 'Royal Oak'. The model is a highly detailed representation of the class, with a 1:76.2 scale die-cast metal chassis and RP25-110 profile OO wheels. It features a minimum radius of 438mm and is DCC ready with a 21-pin socket.

The model includes a range of features such as separately-applied etched metal and plastic details, scale width wire handrails, and etched metal pre-painted nameplates and crests. It also comes with interchangeable printed headcodes and scale-sized snowploughs.

The Class 50 was a class of six-axle diesel locomotives built by English Electric at Vulcan Foundry between 1967 and 1968. The class developed a strong following among enthusiasts, particularly towards the end of the 1980s. The locomotives were initially used on passenger and parcels services, but were later used on freight work and secondary passenger services.

The Accurascale model of the Class 50 is the third and final member of the manufacturer's English Electric six-axle trio, following the Class 55 and Class 37. The model is available to pre-order, with a detailed specification and features list available on the manufacturer's website.

The Class 50 was a complex and innovative design, with a range of features such as rheostatic braking and a slow speed control kit. The class was also prone to reliability issues, particularly with its internal electrical equipment. Despite this, the Class 50 remained in service until 1994, with seven locomotives being preserved and returned to the main line.

The Accurascale model of the Class 50 is designed to capture the full range of changes experienced by the class during its service life, including multiple working equipment, handrails, and headcode options. The model is also available with a range of DCC sound options, including a highly detailed lighting pack and a customised dual-speaker technology.
