Accurascale has announced the OO gauge Class 50 D423 BR Blue Diesel Locomotive, the third model in their English Electric six-axle trio, following the Class 55 and Class 37.

The Class 50 was a class of 50 diesel-electric locomotives built by English Electric at Vulcan Foundry between 1967 and 1968, with 100mph capability. They were delivered in BR corporate blue and were initially allocated to Crewe, with the fleet later being leased to British Rail as part of an innovative deal. The class saw service on various routes, including Crewe to Glasgow, Blackpool, Liverpool and Manchester, as well as freight work.

The locomotives were known for their reliability issues, particularly with their internal electrical equipment, which was plagued by dirt and oil ingress. An extensive refurbishment programme was undertaken in the late 1970s to address these issues, but the class continued to face challenges, including generator problems and a lack of spares.

The Class 50s were eventually phased out in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with several examples being retained for railtours and open days. Today, seven of the class have returned to main line service, with five still active on Network Rail metals.

The Accurascale OO gauge Class 50 D423 BR Blue Diesel Locomotive features a highly-detailed design, with a die-cast metal chassis, separately-applied etched metal and plastic detail parts, and a fully sprung buffer. The model is DCC ready, with a 21-pin socket, and features a working radiator fan, flange squeal sensor, and full lighting package.
