Manufacturer description

Three wagon multi-pack, NER 4T Chaldron

Pack N: The Throckley Coal Company - Formed in 1867, the Throckley Coal Company owned a number of pits to the west of Newcastle, on the north bank of the River Tyne, and were linked to Staiths situated at Leamington by two separate railway branches. Throckley’s fleet of Chaldrons were in use right up to 1947, when they were scrapped by burning, and the company was one of the few that fitted their ex-NER P1 Chaldrons with additional ‘greedy boards’.

Three P1 style Chaldrons, two fitted with additional ‘Greedy Boards’, circa 1946, numbered:

Each pack produced has been themed by colliery, and each waggon depicted is based on photographic evidence and reference to colliery records to confirm lettering styles. Some packs contain just one style of waggon, while others contain mixed styles where research has shown that they operated in conjunction with each other.

Accurascale Chaldron Wagon Throckley Colliery – Pack N is a three‑wagon, N gauge (4‑wheel) model representing a pre‑grouping coal wagon. The wagons are liveried in the colours of the Throckley Colliery, a company formed in 1867 that operated pits west of Newcastle and used the wagons up to 1947.

The pack includes three versions of the NER P1 style chaldron, two of which are supplied with removable “greedy boards” – horizontal extensions that increase the apparent coal load. Each wagon is numbered to match historic records (133, 104, 108) and the liveries are based on photographic evidence and colliery archives.

The models have a die‑cast metal chassis with a plastic body, weigh 9 g unloaded and run on a minimum radius curve of 371 mm (1st radius set‑track). Five body designs covering the period 1840‑1978 are offered, together with three wheel‑spoke styles (split, star and wave) to a blackened 00 gauge RP25‑88 profile. Three braking arrangements, three bang‑board configurations and three types of couplings (metal pin‑jaw, magnetic heads with cotter pins and NEM magnetic couplers) are provided.

Detail parts such as grab handles, door pins, chassis chain points and safety chains are reproduced in eroded metal or plastic. Scale‑accurate wire handrails, hand‑brake levers and fine link chains complete the kit. Artwork for the wagons reflects authentic colliery markings and numbers, verified with assistance from the Beamish Living Museum, Bowes Railway and the North Eastern Railway Association.
