Three wagon multi-pack, NER 4T Chaldron
Pack K: Ex-S.C.C National Coal Board - Three early period Darlington built Chaldrons, as present at Stargate Colliery in February 1950.
Containing three wagons, numbered:
At Stargate Colliery, the lines from Emma and Greenside Collieries converged, with the Emma branch being worked by a stationary engine based at Stargate, which itself was joined to the ex-NER lines near Heathfield, halfway between Stella and Addidson, by a self-acting incline. The stationary engine at Stargate was replaced in 1948 by locomotive working and this practice continued until 1961, when the whole system closed down, the Chaldrons having been in continuous use since the mid-19th century.
Used to supply coal for the boilers at Stargate and Emma, the Chaldrons were also used as service vehicles, with waste and building materials being transported to and from the collieries, while others were used as runner vehicles on the incline between the two collieries. This enabled wagons to be moved into the headshunt at Emma above the screens, as well as to bring empty wagons up from the bottom of the incline. As a result of their longevity in service, it was not uncommon to see both NCB and S.C.Co. legends mixed together in rakes of Chaldrons, an incongruous sight among the more modern wagons being used.

Accurascale ExâS.C.C National Coal Board Chaldron Pack is a threeâwagon model set representing early British rail wagons used on coalâmining sites. The wagons carry the National Coal Board livery, have a fourâwheel arrangement and are built to 00 gauge. The design originates from a midâ17thâcentury prototype and was first constructed around 1820; the pack reproduces a period from the early British Railways crest era.
The pack contains three individual chaldrons numbered 16, 22 and 28, modelled as they appeared at Stargate Colliery in February 1950. At that time the lines from Emma and Greenside Collieries converged at the colliery, with a stationary engine later replaced by locomotive working in 1948. The wagons were employed to supply coal to boilers, transport waste and building materials, and to operate as runner vehicles on a selfâacting incline between the two collieries. Their long service life meant that both National Coal Board and former South Coal Co. markings were often seen together.
Technical specifications include a dieâcast metal chassis with a plastic body, weighing 9âŻg unloaded, and the ability to negotiate a minimum radius curve of 371âŻmm (1st radius setâtrack). The set offers five body designs covering 1840 to 1978, three wheelâspoke styles, three braking arrangements, and optional âgreedy boardsâ for increased coal loading. Details such as handrails, pinâjaw couplings, handâbrake levers, grab handles and safety chains are reproduced in metal or eroded plastic. Wagons are coupled with fine magnetic chain links and include extra magnetic couplings for use with locomotives. Artwork reflects authentic colliery markings based on photographic evidence, with additional research assistance from Beamish Living Museum, Bowes Railway and the North Eastern Railway Association.
