Rapido GWR 45xx No. 4510 – Early Crest Plain Black (Small Crest) is a 1:76 scale (OO gauge) DCC‑sound model of the Great Western Railway 45xx class tank locomotive, supplied with part number 951607. The kit represents the British Railways early‑crest livery and includes a factory‑fitted speaker and a Next18 DCC decoder socket.
The locomotive features a tapered chimney, super‑heated boiler with a long smokebox and late‑stage oil‑pipe cover, inside steam pipes with smokebox patches and a short safety‑valve cover with top feed. The cab has a steel roof, peaked rain‑strips, portholes plated over and side‑shutter doors. Other details include 14‑spoke large‑boss wheels with crescent‑shaped weights, late tank fittings, parallel sprung buffers, ATC equipment, a tall front spring cover, central boiler handrail and additional rivets on the side tanks. The model is fitted with NEM 362 coupler pockets, a MoPower Stay‑Alive capacitor and provides a dynamic fire‑box flicker effect when run on DCC.
The real 45xx class, originally introduced as the “Small Prairie”, entered service in 1906 (prototype No. 2161) and was renumbered into the 4500‑4529 series in December 1912. Production continued at Swindon until 1924, with a total of 75 locomotives built. The class remained in operation under British Railways until the final withdrawal on 31/12/1964.
The Rapido model is supplied highly detailed, with a painted brass number plate appropriate to the chosen version, and is designed for smooth running on standard OO‑gauge track. It is suitable for collectors and modellers seeking an accurate representation of GWR No. 4510 in its early‑crest plain‑black appearance.
