Rapido GWR 45xx No. 4560 is a 1:76 scale (OO gauge) model of a Great Western Railway 2‑6‑2T locomotive in the original green “shirt‑button” livery. The kit reproduces the later‑era features of the class, including a tapered chimney, superheated boiler with a long smokebox, outside steam pipes, a tall safety‑valve cover with top feed, a curved running board with a Mk 3 bunker and flat rear steps, and steel cab roof with rain strips but no portholes. Wheels are 14‑spoke small‑boss types with crescent‑shaped balancing weights, and the model incorporates parallel buffers, a tall front spring cover, central boiler handrail and ATC equipment.
The locomotive is fitted with a Next18 DCC decoder socket and operating on DCC 18, providing a smooth‑running mechanism, dynamic firebox flicker and a factory‑installed speaker for realistic sound. Additional features include sprung buffers, NEM 362 coupler pockets, MoPower “Stay‑Alive” capacitor, and a fully detailed brass‑style number plate supplied in the detail bag.
The original GWR 45xx class was introduced in 1904 as a modified 44xx “Small Prairie” with larger 4 ft 7½ in wheels, allowing speeds of up to 60 mph. Throughout its service life the design was refined with superheated boilers, outside steam pipes and enlarged bunkers, remaining in operation until the final withdrawals in 1964. Rapido’s model captures the post‑Group, pre‑British Railways appearance of No. 4560 as it would have looked in the mid‑1920s.
