Manufacturer description

This four wheeled coach is a representation of the hundreds which served on the GWR from the Victorian era onwards.

Four wheeled coaches proved especially good at branch line work where their small size enabled the traversing of tight radius curves, whilst lower passenger numbers meant their small size was more acceptable and enabled trains to be hauled by smaller engines. This GWR coach is modelled as having step boards to enable access at stations with low platforms and gas lighting.

This model also features our new Maglight system which allows coach lights to be turned on and off using a magnetic wand, removing the need for track pick-ups which would increase rolling resistance.

Hornby Great Western Railway 4‑wheel brake coach, model number R40114, represents a pre‑grouping era carriage (circa Victorian period). The coach is finished in a pristine chocolate and cream livery, painted brown, and carries the running number 301. It measures 135 mm in length, is built to OO gauge, and can negotiate a minimum radius of 438 mm (2nd Radius).

The model includes interior lighting and is fitted with Hornby’s Maglight system, allowing the lights to be switched on and off with a magnetic wand, eliminating the need for track pick‑ups. It has a NEM/tension‑lock coupling, no power pickup, and features step boards for use on stations with low platforms, reflecting the original design for branch‑line work.

Designed by the GWR, the four‑wheel brake third‑class coach was commonly used on small‑engine services where tight curves and lower passenger numbers required a compact, versatile carriage.
